COP26 Letter writing event – a plea to politicians

On Saturday morning 16^th October 2021, Beccles Meeting held a Letter Writing Open Morning to help and encourage people to write letters to the Prime Minister and other senior politicians involved in COP26, expressing their concerns about climate change and its implications for us all. This was the final part of our contribution towards raising awareness of the importance of COP26, the UN Conference on climate change to be held in Glasgow in early November, hosted by our Prime Minister.

Early publicity included local posters and information on our website, and on the day the Meeting Room was full of enlarged press cuttings and information on the devastating impact climate change is having around the world. The room was set up with individual tables well provided with paper and pens, envelopes and stamps, and an example letter for reference. Two Friends went up to the Market Square to speak to as many people as possible and encourage them to join us at the Meeting House to write their letters – and a handout to help them write from home if they preferred. We had many good conversations, both in the Market Square and in the Meeting House. The response and atmosphere were very good, warm and friendly with the teas, coffees and cookies much appreciated. On the day we were able to send 22 letters to the Prime Minister and other leading politicians, and more letters at different times.  Let’s hope they take good account of them!
