10 – 11 April weekend 2021 – An invitation
The produce of the earth is a gift from our gracious creator to the inhabitants, and to impoverish the earth now to support outward greatness appears to be an injury to the succeeding age.
John Woolman, 1772 (Quaker faith & practice 25.01)
This is an invitation to everyone who cares for our fragile planet and is concerned to try to stop the damage we are doing to it. We invite you to begin the Journey by going to a place that is sacred or meaningful for you – whether in person, virtually or in your imagination.
When? 10th/11th April 2021 weekend – anytime for as long as you choose.
Why? To celebrate the beauty of nature, its fragility and strength, all it means and gives us, how we value and love it, how we rely on it.
To raise our personal awareness of the crucial importance of our natural world and environment, and to help us face up to the damage we have done and continue to do by our selfish exploitation of its resources, by our pollution of its waters and of the air, and by our greed.
To help strengthen our personal resolve to do all we can to change this.
Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.
James Baldwin (1924-1987)
How? We invite you to find time during this time for a quiet walk alone or with a friend or with a group (of up to six people, if allowed by Covid restrictions), and take time to realise the urgency of the challenge which faces us today. Together we can help our Government rise to the challenge of the climate emergency and support our Prime Minister when he hosts the Climate Conference (COP 26) in Glasgow next November, to be courageous.
The context? The world is at a crossroad. Urgent action is required to limit rises in global temperature to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels and avert the catastrophic impact of climate change.
November of this year sees the United Nations World Climate Conference in Glasgow (COP26). It aims to bring together all countries to agree what action is needed and to make their own commitment to the action they will urgently take to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the extreme effects of climate change. It is seen by many to be the last chance the world has to unite to prevent a climate catastrophe
Quakers in Britain invite us to begin a Journey towards COP26 and our Quaker Meeting is keen to take up the challenge along with other faith groups, organisations and individuals in our area. The journey will be one that raises awareness, increases understanding and leading to action ahead of the climate talks
We invite you to take the first steps with us as explained above. Let us know if you want to get involved and, as they develop, what your plans are. Please feel free to share this invitation with others you think might be interested in joining us.
You can contact us in a number of ways and we look forward to hearing from you.
